Balcony


We never had a balcony in Kuala Lumpur. It was a priority when we arrived in Phnom Penh. We spend every evening on the balcony. Cooking the BBQ, eating dinner, and watching the storms roll in.


We have not used the air conditioning during the day. The breeze comes in and cools the flat. 


With the door opened, you feel connected to the world. Bikes, cars, horns, roosters. The sounds are the backdrop to everything we do.

    The first apartment I had in Southbank had a 1m x1m balcony, half taken up by the air conditioning unit. Never went out on it, no point, 1 person barely fit. When Esra and I moved to our current residence, we now have a 5m x 2m balcony, seating for 4, BBQ, plants, greenhouse. Agreed, its amazing how much more connected to outside you can be with a usable balcony off a shoe-box apartment.

Camera comebacks

I have an old Nikon D3100 with a 35mm f/1.8G lens. I like the fixed lens. Uncomplicated. The old Nikons were simple enough to use on manual without being an enthusiast. It is a great setup.   I carried the camera around Melbourne and took some nice shots. I used it a bit when we arrived in Kuala Lumpur. I posted my better images on Photoblog. I even received a monthly award for a photo of Shell at a Burgundy night.   Photoblog went bust and took all the images with them. Six years' worth of photography is gone. I didn't back the photos up anywhere. When the blog went bust, the images were lost forever.   The camera sat in the cupboard for a few years.   When the ride came along, Shell decided to get a camera. She did her research, and I didn't have much input. The camera I loved had less power than an iPhone and I was not up to date with the latest information.
